Before you make or purchase hedgehog cage, make sure you do not make the following mistakes:
Having an aquarium. Many first-time hedgehog owners assume that glass aquariums make perfectly safe cages for hedgehogs. This isn’t true. Aquariums lack proper ventilation under normal conditions and are notorious for collecting excess moisture and odor. Aquariums may also become literal ovens each time a heating unit is added placing the very time of your hedgehog in danger. There are lots of other cage styles that are in the same way little as and in many cases better to keep clean than aquariums, techniques not risk the fitness of your hedgehog to save time and cash!
Wire cage floors. To become safe, a hedgehog cage should never use a wire floor. Unlike larger animals including rabbits, hedgehogs have tiny feet and legs, rendering it very easy on your hedgie to fall partially through while moving. While falling through may seem harmless, this will actually cause much more severe injuries like broken limbs.
One other reason to stop wire floors in hedgehog cages is that they can be too rough on sensitive feet. A lot of people don’t understand that foot issues are incredibly common among hedgehogs. Hedgehogs have delicate feet and toes that are easily injured and frequently become infected. Instead, avoid these health problems altogether by choosing a greater living environment for your hedgehog.
Using wood. Wood is just not an excellent material to get a hedgehog cage in that it can absorb urine and become quite stinky. Contain ramps or shelves which a hedgehog can disappear of.
The only safe ramps and ledges are those with a solid railing which a hedgehog cannot fall through. A lot of people think that because animals like hedgehogs are really small that they can not be easily hurt in a fall. This is not true. Serious injuries can take place even in falls from short distances.
Doesn’t need a creature proof top if you have other pets. Usually do not think that other pets will not likely access off limit areas! In case you have the cat or dog that can access your hedgehog cage, make sure you have an animal proof top set up! Wire screens with wooden frames which can be secured work nicely. If by using a sterilte tub as a cage, you may also work with a matching lid if you cut a lot of air holes.
