Nobody looks forward to creating a cavity drilled and filled with a dentist. Now there’s an alternative: an antimicrobial liquid that can be brushed on cavities to halt cavities – painlessly.
The liquid is termed silver diamine fluoride, or S.D.F. It’s been used for decades in Japan, but it’s been for sale in america, underneath the manufacturer Advantage Arrest, for almost annually.
The foodstuff and Drug Administration cleared silver diamine fluoride to use like a tooth desensitizer for adults 21 and older. But research shows it might halt the growth of cavities which will help prevent them, and dentists are increasingly using it off-label for those purposes.
