Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) differentially bind to androgen receptors according to each SARM’s chemical structure. Consequently, SARMs cause anabolic cellular activity while avoiding many of the unwanted side effects of currently available steroid drugs. SARMs are already studied in the treating breast cancer and cachexia and also have already been utilized as performance-enhancing agents. Here, we evaluate and summarize the existing literature on SARMs.
Aim
To provide the history, mechanisms, current and potential clinical applications, along with risks and advantages of SARMs.
Methods
A literature review was performed in MEDLINE with all the terms selective androgen receptor modulator, hypogonadism, cachexia, cancer of the breast, benign prostatic hyperplasia, libido, and muscle. Both preliminary research and clinical tests were included.
Main Outcome Measure
To finish overview of peer-reviewed literature.
Results
Although there are currently no U.S. Drug and food Agency-approved indications for SARMs, investigators are exploring the potential uses for these compounds. Preliminary research has focused on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of such agents, demonstrating good availability using a paucity of drug interactions. Early clinical tests have demonstrated potential uses for SARMs within the treating cancer-related cachexia, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), hypogonadism, and breast cancers, with good results.
Conclusion
SARMs have some of possible clinical applications, with promise for that safe used in the management of cachexia, BPH, hypogonadism, cancers of the breast, and prostate type of cancer.
