There’s sex work, webcamming doesn’t have the best reputation. It’s often viewed as exploitation or even a last-resort hustle to debt, but Reed Amber, 26, explains how webcam models are only your average self-employed freelancers sticking with the same level of agency and independence anyone else.
Model, producer and co-creator of YouTube channel ComeCurious, Reed is actually the physical embodiment of sex positivity, which she defines as “trying to generate people seem like what they’re doing along with what they’re into isn’t wrong, it’s normal and it’s absolutely fine.” She’s a massive advocate for removing stigma and taboos around sex, and now we trapped with your ex to learn more about webcamming, a line of sex work that’s seldom talked about.
Exactly why do you believe some men, and probably women too, prefer it to porn?
“There’s a great deal free porn i feel webcamming is much more of the personal one-on-one. You are able to use the internet and find any ol’ stuff, but webcamming is much more personal; it’s tailored exactly to what you desire and what you’re searching for. You’re not sharing it with 100 thousand other people. Here’s your show. Usually you develop a relationship, I speak with you as a friend and i also respect you as being a person. ‘How has your mood been, what have you get from the shops, exactly what are you cooking for dinner…’ it’s like an online relationship”
…So it’s kind of like the ‘girlfriend experience’?
“Yes, it’s like the girlfriend experience. But that also depends upon what the webcam model is a lot like and also what are the person paying is similar to because we all want something different.”
Perhaps you have had say no to a request?
“I’m definitely one with the cam girls who does seldom say no. I’ve always aspired to try a new challenge, but that’s not because I felt like I had to. It’s just personally a few things i want to do. I would like to tick stuff off my list, I would like to try everything once especially when looking at sex positivity. Regardless of whether it’s something I’m not really into, I’d still try it. Easily didn’t want it, I’d end up like ‘sorry, I’m definitely not into that.’ But there’s a number of people that would say no to a lot of things.”
Are there any really common requests you will get?
“It depends upon the profile that you setup because when you produce a profile, you are writing just a little bio about you, and my bio could possibly be seen as an a bit more ‘out there’. I’m open to anything, like roleplay, so a lot of the time I purchase roleplay requests, more just because I have discovered them fun it doesn’t matter how unusual or bizarre they are. What excites me are uncommon and weird requests that you just wouldn’t really run into. Life’s too boring otherwise”
A way to react once you let them know what you do?
“I have a mixture of emotions. Mostly people react positively with the way I discuss it. It’s so different if you’re really shy and timid and quiet about it. It immediately gives off this concept of ‘oh they’re not completely happy with it.’
Basically you are free to be your sex-positive self to your full potential…
“Exactly! That’s where I got my first taste of sex positivity. Going through my relationships and going to university I had been like ‘woah, nobody thinks generate income do, I need to be weird’. But being a webcam model, I realised most people are into something else entirely, they just seem like they can’t discuss it.”
